Is it safe for me to download Internet Explorer 8 without an antivirus on my computer?

I have Windows Vista and I didn’t get an antivirus as of yet. Is it safe for me to download IE 8 anyways, just as I would download (for example) a security update or something like that? It popped up finally in the Windows Update on my computer and I would really like to know. Thank you for your help!

How do you get rid of your old antivirus protection so you can download a new one?

My laptop is new and came with McAfee on it, and I used the free 90-day trial on my computer. The subscription is now up, and I want to download new antivirus protection. When I download the new one, do I have to worry about it conflicting with McAfee, or do I have to worry about deleting it? If so, how?
